Living and being educated internationally and in a very international environment has taught me a lot. I will soon be adding more insights I’ve learned here and from all my classes as time progresses, but for now. I’ve come across some interesting artifacts in my studies for Cultural Issues in International Business. I’m really enjoying reading this text book, because so much of it is common sense, but not thought about until it is pointed out to you verbatim.

    For example:

For me and much of the rest of the world, the British don’t drive on the left side of the road, they drive on the wrong side of the road.

This is pretty revealing isn’t it?

Although very hard to do, it’s becoming more and more necessary to attempt to view other cultures without so much bias from our own.

As the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard once said “To open our eyes to the absurdity of our own customs is the charm and benefit of travel.”

    Think about it…

    – Ross

P.S. – the text book, if you’re interested, is Managing Across Cultures by Susan Schneider and Jean-Louis Barsoux. It’s very well-written and a nice read for a text book.

Two days ago I survived yet another apocalypse. I remember vividly that the world was supposed to end at the turn of the millenium…made it through that one. May 21, 2011 came and went…made it through that one. Now we just have to wait for December 21, 2012 – supposedly yet another apocalypse will occur…I think I’ll continue to live my life and do my best in this world…just to be safe, in case it doesn’t happen again.

I’ve seen a lot of responses to the end-of-the-world-predictions, some humorous, some disappointing, and some just outright unacceptable and disrespectful.

    For Example:

Speaking to him in such a tone and being so disrespectful hurts my heart. I mean, look at this video of him by a slightly more respectful reporter:

He seems like such a normal, sweet man – someone we see everyday, maybe even a neighbor or a family member!

I believe our reactions to such events as this, and CERTAINLY our reactions and actions towards individual people, should be more calculated. We should not always act with our first instincts, but instead reflect within before making judgements. We should not ridicule those that think differently than us, we are all entitled to our thoughts. It’s clear from the video that Mr. Fitzgerald was disappointed and in disbelief that the rapture had not started. He was simply misguided in his efforts by a fringe religious group preaching the calculated end of the world. He spent his life savings, over $140,000, on ads supporting the cause. He must now face the fact that his future is undoubtedly less assured than it was before.

Never underestimate the power of religion, cults, and charismatic leaders with atypical ideas. Afterall, Jim Jones somehow convinced 909 members of his creation, The Peoples’ Temple, to commit suicide by drinking cyanide-laced koolaid – first giving the drink to the children, then to the adults. This is still on record as one of the largest mass suicides in history.

So what am I saying here?

Stay respectful and choose your leaders wisely.

    – Ross

Post Script: If you’re interested in viewing a PBS documentary on The Peoples’ Temple, HERE IS A LINK. This link will take you to part one of 9 parts. The other parts will be links in the sidebar and you can go from there.

UPDATE: Well, this is a twist I didn’t see coming…so let me add this to my advice: Stay respectful, choose your leaders wisely, and admit when you’re wrong.

Watch out Ladies & Gentleman, cause something is in the water in North Louisiana!!!!

Not to raise alarm, but it may actually be in the entire Sparta Aquifer which is the source of H2O for much of that entire area! It’s creating an epidemic and it’s truly alarming!

But it’s okay…I think it’s possible that if you are in the affected area, you may be able to survive!  I recommend drinking water only from local creeks, rivers, lakes or collected rain that has been triple filtered through carbon, purified  by UV light, and boiled on a regular stove top or hot plate then cooled back down for consumption. [Please note that I do not condone drinking boiling water.] For information on creating safe drinking water, please see HERE.

You may be wondering when it will be safe to start drinking tap water again…and as soon as I stop receiving the weekly, if not daily, texts, emails, Facebook statuses, emails, and homing pigeons informing me of the pregnancies of people I graduated high school with or knew while I was in high school – – – then it will be safe.

I will, of course, keep you updated on any news.

    Take luck, everyone!

Those words can’t even BEGIN to describe how I feel right now. Should I be crying? Should I be screaming? Should I just throw my hands up in submission?

The truth is, reading articles on our government and their decisions lately just make me speechless. Literally, I think if someone were here in my room with me, I wouldn’t be able utter a word…which is why I’ve taken it upon myself to type the words and feelings I cannot say aloud.

Actually, I really don’t know if I can even type them. So I’m not going to try till I’m a little more level-headed than I am at the moment.

I will, however, share this with you:

How much longer do you think we can continue inequality and injustice?! How much longer do you think we can keep THIS up?! How much longer can we continue to endorse the massive chasm that divides our party lines before our country implodes on itself?! How much longer can we have people like THIS and THIS gaining momentum and ranking in our country before we see things going to hell in a handbasket?!

I’m not saying I have all the answers…actually, I’m not saying I have any at all!!!!! But SURELY you can’t watch the news in the morning and get a warm and fuzzy feeling about the direction our country is headed. And I’m talkin’ Fox OR CNN, I don’t give a f&#@ what station you watch – they may both report biases beyond belief, but surely there is NO way you can feed into it so much that you believe it’s a good thing.

I’m a social liberal, fiscal conservative. So I’m personally pissed at both sides right now. So don’t think I’m sitting here saying “gah, the Republicans suck” or “the Democrats are gonna ruin our nation,” because I’m not. I’m saying both at the same time, which makes my emotions even harder to handle right now. Because not only do I not have a side – I’ve got two sides working against me.

    There. I’m done.

It’s late here. I gotta sleep this off…slaapwel.
